Widemouth Bay.

Widemouth Bay stretches across a wide, exposed Atlantic-facing beach south of Bude, serving up multiple shifting peaks over a mixed sand and reef bottom. The main body of the beach produces crumbly, mid-pace lefts and rights that flatten and steepen with the tide, offering something rideable through the full tidal range. Camel Rock anchors the northern end while Black Rock marks the south - both reef sections produce more defined, harder-breaking waves than the sandy middle, with Black Rock's left and right running steeper and occasionally barrelling on a solid groundswell. The sandy beach section is genuinely beginner-accessible when conditions are small, though mid tide is the local preference: high tide can push waves hard onto rocks, and low tide intensifies the rips. The reefs are a different proposition, drawing a committed local crew and demanding more experience. SW swell is the bread and butter, with W to WNW also producing quality surf; an easterly wind comes straight offshore. Consistency is high through autumn and winter. Multiple surf schools operate here, which, combined with a large summer tourist population, makes the main beach very busy from July through August. Ample pay parking sits at both the north and south ends of the beach, with easy stair and ramp access to the sand.
