Crooklets sits at the northern end of Bude's town beach, breaking over a mix of shifting sand and uneven rock shelves. The wave produces short, fast peaks that can pitch hollow on the lower tide when the banks line up, then flatten into more forgiving, mellow rollers as the tide fills. The shape data shows a wave that alternates between steep, quick sections and slower, welling rides - not a one-trick pony. At high tide, Tower Rock produces a short-lived left that can deceive the unwary with its abruptness, and the shorebreak occasionally throws a genuine pummelling. Peaks shift north and south with the banks; a walk north toward Northcott Mouth can unlock better-organised sandbars when the town beach is walled out. The spot works on a SW swell with an easterly offshore holding it clean; west and northwest swells also deliver, and the consistency is high enough to find surf here reliably through autumn and winter. Beginners can use the middle of the bay in smaller conditions, but rising swell pulls rips toward the rocky margins and the character shifts firmly toward intermediate and above. Access is straightforward from the promenade - the car park sits immediately behind the beach. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards in season. Crowds build quickly when the surf is on, given the central town location.
