Crackington Haven.

Crackington Haven sits in a compact, cliff-backed cove on the North Cornwall coast, where the headlands filter incoming swell and take the sting out of most swells reaching the beach. The break works over a mixed bottom of sand and uneven reef, producing crumbly, medium-paced lefts and rights that peel toward the rip channel rather than closing out sharply. Wave faces are generally sloping rather than steep, with flat spots and a well-covered bottom that keeps things manageable rather than powerful. The result is a forgiving wave well-suited to progression surfing but rarely exciting for advanced riders chasing performance. A pure W or WNW swell direction delivers the cleanest angle into the cove; the SW-to-NW window can all work, but the headlands shadow anything too far south. SE to ESE winds are offshore. The cove also offers unusual shelter from northerly winds, making it a viable option when exposed beaches nearby are blown out. Wave size here runs noticeably smaller than Widemouth to the north. Access is straightforward via the village road, which descends directly to a slipway. Rocks line both sides of the cove, so staying central on the beach is the right approach. The rip channel can be paddled for an easier exit. In summer the beach draws families and bathers alongside surfers, and a tight local crew is present - respectful behaviour goes a long way. The river at the south end carries farm pollution and debris after rainfall. RNLI lifeguard cover is seasonal.
