Summerleaze sits at the heart of Bude, shaped by the interaction of a sandy beach, the tidal sea pool, harbour wall and river mouth. The wave fires both ways depending on tide and bank: a low-tide left peels off Barrel Rock with some pace before shutting down, while a right hinging off the sea pool at mid to high tide meanders toward the river mouth with softer shoulders - the more user-friendly face of the break. The harbour wall and headland provide partial wind and swell shelter on southerly or westerly swells, making the southern end notably calmer than exposed beaches nearby. WSW to W swell is the preferred angle, with easterly winds going offshore. Workable from 0.5m upward, the beach loses shape and becomes powerful above 2m - large Atlantic swell turns the paddle into a serious undertaking and the river-mouth rip strengthens markedly. Autumn delivers the most reliable quality windows; summer surf is inconsistent and the beach fills with holidaymakers. Surf schools operate here specifically because of the sheltered corner and sandy bottom, but beginners should stick to small, lifeguarded conditions - the same features that calm the inside can generate strong tidal currents. Access is direct from Summerleaze car park, which sits immediately behind the beach north of the river.

Summerleaze gets busy - it is Bude's most central beach and draws surf school groups, beginners and intermediates alongside experienced surfers on bigger days. Summer crowds are heavy and the car park fills quickly.

Summerleaze car park sits immediately north of the river, directly behind the beach, with both standard and disabled access to the sand. Roadside parking also available nearby. The car park is paid and fills during summer and good swell days.
