Faja dos Vimes is the only regularly surfed break on the south coast of Sao Jorge, a remote Azorean island best known for its dramatic north-coast fajas. The spot breaks as a left-hander over a submerged rock ledge, picking up swell from the SE through W window, with SW and due W swells producing the best shape. When a solid W swell lines up, the wave gets fast and hollow, running barrel sections before closing out onto shallow rock. The ride is shorter than the celebrated north-coast fajas but considerably more powerful, offering steep take-offs and punchy walls that reward committed intermediate surfers. W winds destroy the surface completely, so a NE offshore is essential for clean conditions - a combination that aligns with Azores trade-wind patterns in spring and summer. Size ranges from 1m to 3m, with the spot holding bigger swells well on its rock ledge foundation. The surrounding faja itself is an agricultural ledge of land between cliff and sea, accessible by a narrow road from Calheta.
