Lhoknga is a renowned reef break located about 20 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh on the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. It features a coral reef bottom and offers multiple peaks with both left and right-hand waves; the right is more forgiving while the left provides hollow, barreling sections favored by experienced surfers. The break is consistent across all tides and best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The reef is sharp and can be shallow, especially at low tide, so caution is advised. Swells from the southwest provide the best conditions, with offshore winds from the northeast keeping the waves clean. The area, which has recovered from severe damage caused by the 2004 tsunami, can become crowded during peak seasons, and surfers are encouraged to respect local customs and surf etiquette. Amenities such as toilets, prayer rooms, parking, board rentals, local warungs, and food stalls are available within walking distance of the beach. Visitors should also be mindful of local laws, including Sharia law, which influences nightlife and alcohol availability.
