Cornwall's premier reef break - a fast, hollow, shallow A-frame beside the harbour wall firing on solid SW swells.
Porthleven sits on Cornwall's south coast, breaking over a shallow uneven reef on the west side of the harbour wall. The primary wave is a powerful A-frame, best known for a short, fast right barrel that jacks up hard and runs shallow over exposed rock on the inside. The left offers more length on the right swell angle. A second hollow right breaks in front of the pier and draws bodyboarders. This is widely regarded as Cornwall's best reef break - a bold claim backed up by the calibre of surfers it consistently attracts, including professionals and film crews when conditions align. The break needs solid SW to W swell to light up, with NE winds keeping the face clean. Mid-tide is the sweet spot; low tide turns the inside into a rock-skimming exercise, and high water kills the shape. Entry is off rocks, paddling through the harbour channel - observe from the harbour wall or clifftop before committing. Autumn through winter is the season, with reliable groundswells pushing through roughly September to February. When it fires, it is packed: a tight, experienced local crew, visiting pros and travelling surfers all converge on a very small peak, making it one of the most competitive lineups in the UK.
