Porthtowan is an exposed Atlantic beachbreak on the north Cornwall coast, producing powerful hollow peaks off shifting sandbars when the banks are stacked. The wave breaks both left and right across the bay, with the southern low-tide section - locally known as Lushingtons or Lushies - throwing up fast hollow lefts that bodyboarders prize. The north end can serve up a workable right. The southern corner catches some shelter from the prevailing southwest wind, making it one of the more usable spots on the peninsula in typical conditions. Swell from the west and west-northwest wraps in most cleanly; southeast and east winds are offshore. The break fires through all tides, though falling and low water steepens the banks and produces the quicker, hollower faces. High tide shrinks the beach and rounds the wave off. Autumn delivers the best combination of swell size and quality, though the spot picks up surf year-round thanks to its open Atlantic exposure. Strong and sometimes sudden rip currents are the primary hazard - the bay has seen organised RNLI rescues during moderate swells. Access is simple: public parking sits directly behind the beach off Beach Road, with a short sand walk to the lineup. The water holds a sizable local crew year-round and becomes very busy through summer, so reading the lineup before paddling out is worthwhile.
