Nihiwatu, also known as Occy's Left, is a renowned luxury surf spot on Sumba’s southwest coast, famed for its long, barreling lefts over a shallow, sharp reef directly in front of Nihi Resort. Access is highly exclusive and strictly limited to resort guests, with only a few surfers allowed in the water at any time, ensuring uncrowded sessions. The wave offers long, hollow sections and powerful takeoffs, making it best suited for experienced surfers, especially during solid south or southwest swells. The spot is known for its pristine, tropical surroundings and crystal-clear water, providing stunning backdrops. Hazards include the shallow reef, strong currents, powerful waves, sea urchins, and the risk of being caught inside, particularly on bigger swells or at lower tides. Surfing is safest and the wave shapes best at mid to high tide, with direct beachfront access and guidance provided by resort staff.
