Surf spot guide · Sumatra Islands, Indonesia
Banyak Islands — Shallow, Fast, Versatile
The Banyaks are a group of islands off northern Sumatra, renowned for their consistent and high-quality reef breaks. Waves here range from playful rights to heavy left barrels, catering mainly to experienced surfers. Access is exclusively by boat, preserving the area's uncrowded and pristine appeal. The best waves are found between April and October when Indian Ocean swells light up the reefs. Hazards include sharp coral, strong currents, and occasional sea urchins, so caution is advised. Most surf spots have no land access, adding to their secluded charm.
