Surf spot guide · Java, Indonesia
Batu Karas is a mellow right-hand point break in a sheltered bay, ideal for beginners and longboarders, set in a friendly Javanese fishing village.
Batu Karas is a renowned surf spot on the southern coast of West Java, Indonesia, famous for its long, peeling right-hand point break known as BK Point. The wave gently wraps around a small headland into a deep, sandy bay within a quiet fishing village, offering soft, long, and forgiving rides that can stretch up to 200 meters. This makes it especially ideal for longboards, foamies, and mid-lengths, catering well to beginners and intermediates who enjoy easy paddling and mellow conditions. The spot remains relaxed and welcoming, with a laid-back village vibe supported by surf homestays, local eateries, and a friendly atmosphere far removed from the intensity of more famous Indonesian surf destinations. Access to the break is easy, either by walking around the point or paddling out through a channel from the beach. The waves break over a forgiving black sand bottom and are generally consistent, working best with a south or southwest swell and light northeasterly winds. While the lineup can get crowded during weekends and holidays, the overall mellow atmosphere endures, making Batu Karas one of the best places to learn to surf in Indonesia.
