Petites Dalles sits on the chalk-cliff coastline of the Côte d'Albâtre, a shingle beach that generates peaky, boulder-influenced surf with a character somewhere between beach break and reef. The wave is mellow and slopey rather than powerful, with well-covered sections and a tendency to well up rather than pitch hard - forgiving enough for early learners but capable of decent shape on larger swells. Mid to high tide is the window; too low and the boulder field becomes a minefield. The spot responds to a wide swell window spanning west through northeast, with solid SW groundswell delivering the most organised peaks. NE swells can also work, though they typically arrive with onshore wind and choppier conditions. Offshore winds blow from the SE. Wave lengths run 50-100m and the break handles up to roughly 2.4m before becoming a stretch. This stretch of coast is better known as a windsurfing and kitesurfing hub, which defines the in-water dynamic as much as any crowd dynamic - wind-sport users are a regular presence. Access is straightforward from a free car park with roadside overflow. The lineup sees moderate traffic on good days, drawing a mix of novice surfers and wind-sport enthusiasts rather than a territorial crew.
