Surf spot guide Β· Corsica, France
A-frame beach break south of Ajaccio producing short, mushy peaks that tolerate onshore conditions better than most.
Le Ruppione is an a-frame beach break on Corsica's southwest coast, situated just past the headland of Punta di Sette Nave. The wave breaks over a sand bottom and delivers short peaks in the 0-50m range, with both a left and right available depending on the sandbar. The left on the south side is the more defined of the two. Wave character tends toward the fat and sloppy end of the spectrum - well-covered with flat spots mid-face and a steep initial section - making it workable for intermediates but rarely punishing. It can absorb light onshore wind without completely closing out, which is useful given the Mediterranean's temperamental conditions. Best swell window runs from S through W to NW, with an optimal W push producing the most consistent shape. Rip currents run through the break and sea lice and jellyfish are seasonal concerns. The beach has camping, a surf school, and a surf shop nearby, making it a logical first stop for travelling surfers in the area. Those seeking more quality should note La Castagne reefbreak close by, set among Corsica's characteristic wind-sculpted granite coast and offering a noticeably superior wave. Crowds are moderate and localism is not a significant issue here.
