Challaborough is a sheltered South Devon bay delivering two distinct setups over a rock ledge and sand bottom. The headline wave is a right-hander peeling from rocks at the bay's north end, best exposed at low tide as it wraps into deeper water; sandbank peaks can produce rideable waves across the bay through the tidal cycle, and a left occasionally breaks off the cliffs on the opposite side. The bay picks up less swell than nearby Bantham, so it tends to be mellow and forgiving at smaller sizes but wedgier and more demanding as the swell builds. It fires on solid southwest swell with a northeast offshore wind, and its sheltered position means it can still produce clean conditions when neighbouring beaches are blown out. Winter - roughly October through February - is the primary season. Entry is via 11 concrete steps with a handrail or a ramp at the north end, with a holiday-park slipway also available. The lineup is generally relaxed and no localism issues are documented, but the bay draws a crowd when conditions click. Bigger surf activates strong rips, and the inside current near the point can sweep surfers onto the rocks; the marked boating lane through the bay adds an additional consideration.
