Bantham sits at the mouth of the River Avon in South Hams, Devon, where the river's outflow continually reshapes a sandy seabed into a central peak - locally called The Rip - with both lefts and rights, and a more structured right tucked against the rivermouth known as The Rivermouth. The bank-building action of the river is what gives the spot its character: on a good day the sandbars pitch hollow, bowly sections that punch above what the Devonian coast usually offers. Because the banks migrate, quality varies session to session. Southwest swells are the target, with the spot working from waist-high to well overhead; a northeast wind keeps conditions clean. Stormrider rates it the best beach in South Devon and gives it an excellent quality tag - a mark few beachbreaks on this coast share. September through February delivers the most reliable swell windows, with summer typically too flat. Access is straightforward: drive through Bantham village to the beach car park, then walk onto the sand. When it fires, the lineup fills fast. A competitive local crew holds the main peak, and the approach lanes are narrow - use the paid car park to avoid hassle. The rivermouth rights tend to draw slightly fewer surfers when the main peak is saturated. Beginners can find gentler conditions at the beach ends in smaller surf, but the running rips demand respect from any skill level.
