Whareakeake (Murderers).

Whareakeake - long known by locals as Murderers - is a world-class right-hand point break located roughly 25km south of Dunedin on New Zealand's Otago coast. The wave peels over a mix of boulders and sand, producing rides that stretch from 200 to 500 metres when conditions align. At smaller sizes it offers a forgiving, mellow wall ideal for longboarding; as swell pushes past head-high the wave tightens into a hollow, fast-moving racetrack with legitimate barrel sections and a vertical takeoff that demands commitment. The catch: it needs a rare NE to E swell window, which materialises only a handful of times per year. When the sand banks are stacked correctly and a clean NE groundswell arrives with a southerly wind grooming the face, the result is as good as the Southern Hemisphere produces - long, powerful, wrapping rights with ample tube time from take-off to the beach. Because firing sessions are so infrequent, word travels fast and a committed local crew will already be in the water. The access road is steep and slippery; take it slowly. Strong rips work along the boulder-lined shore, and white sharks are present in these waters. Respect the locals, read the rips before paddling out, and wear booties to protect feet from the submerged rocks.
