Surf spot guide Β· Otago & Southland, New Zealand
Sheltered multi-sectioned rights beneath steep cliffs on rare NE swells β long paddle from the rivermouth.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.7m expected at Potato Point. Peak conditions around 6:00 AM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Potato Point breaks on NE to E swells that most of the Otago coast misses entirely, its sheltered position meaning it catches swell angles that the south-facing beaches can't reach. The wave is a multi-sectioned right-hander that breaks over boulders and sand beneath steep, dramatic cliffs. Rides stretch 200 to 500 metres when the sections link, though on most days the wave breaks in distinct phases that require repositioning between sets. Low to mid tide on an outgoing push is the target. SW winds are offshore. The paddle-out is long, starting from the rivermouth and working around to the point - this commitment, combined with the rare swell requirement, means the lineup is almost always empty. Waves along Purakaunui Beach and the other side of Doctor's Point offer alternatives on more common swell directions. Rips, sharks, and submerged rocks are hazards through the lineup.
