Surf spot guide Β· Otago & Southland, New Zealand
Sand spit A-frame near Dunedin offering square barrels on NE swells, with bigger waves beneath volcanic cliffs.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.0m expected at Aramoana. Peak conditions around 6:00 AM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Aramoana sits at the entrance to Otago Harbour, a sand spit break roughly 20km northeast of Dunedin. At its best, it produces square, heaving barrels when northeast swells combine with south to southwest winds - a combination that doesn't arrive often but rewards patience. On more typical days, average A-frame peaks run from the spit itself up toward the rocky midway section, where the character shifts and the wave becomes more technical. At the northern end, the wave grows notably larger in front of colourful volcanic cliffs, offering a more dramatic and powerful ride for experienced surfers. The break functions across all tides, with incoming tide generally smoothing out conditions. When the swell is up and the jetty is accessible, it provides a convenient deep-water entry point that bypasses the shorebreak - a route best reserved for those who know the spot. The environment is raw and exposed: New Zealand fur seals haul out nearby, and sharks are an established presence in these waters. Crowds can form when conditions align, but space is usually sufficient. Localism is mild but present. A genuinely consistent break by South Island standards, firing around 7 days in 10.
Square barrels where northeast swell meets south wind, rare and worth the wait.

Sometimes crowded when conditions are good, but the length of the break typically provides enough room to spread out.
