Waipiro Bay.

Waipiro Bay is a raw and rarely surfed pointbreak complex tucked into the remote East Cape of New Zealand's North Island. The spot comes alive on moderate NE swells or powerful SE groundswells, with the optimal window sitting firmly in the SE quadrant. Three sections define the break. Kitties is the most accessible inside section, closer to the beach and suited to intermediate surfers looking for longer walls with room to breathe. Frog Rock sits further out, offering shorter, faster rides that terminate abruptly on rocks - demanding precise timing and confident surfing. Creek is the outside section and the star of the show on a big day: a fast, hollow beast with powerful well-up sections and near-vertical takeoffs that are best left to experienced surfers comfortable in serious conditions. Wave faces run from two to ten feet and rides can stretch anywhere from 200 to 500 metres when the stars align. The beachbreaks elsewhere in the bay are above average, and rocky outcrops at the north end hold additional waves. Submerged rocks, shallow sections, and boiling water throughout the lineup demand respect. A steep gravel access road means the drive in requires care, especially on larger swell days. Crowds are rare - this is genuine New Zealand wilderness surfing.
