A hollow right-hand point break peels off the rocks at the northern end of a scenic East Coast bay, breaking over uneven reef with shallow, boily sections that demand precise positioning. The wave wraps into the bay with a bowly wall and critical takeoff, producing genuine barrels when a solid SE swell lines up with high tide and NW offshore winds. The swell window is wide, accepting anything from NE through S, but the spot only truly fires on SE groundswell. Located near a disused wharf and boat ramp on the remote Gisborne coast, roughly 91km north of Gisborne city, access is straightforward but the isolation keeps crowds thin. The lineup sees occasional surfers when conditions align, though the low consistency and advanced skill requirement filter out most visitors. Nearby Waipiro Bay and Anaura Bay offer alternative options when Tokomaru is flat or maxing out.
