Waiapu is a rivermouth beachbreak on the remote East Cape coast near Tikitiki, where the Waiapu River meets the sea and shapes ever-changing sand and shingle bars. The wave produces punchy, shifting A-frame peaks that move with the bars - no two sessions are the same. Low to mid tide on an incoming push is the target, when the bars are most defined and the wave has room to break before the shore. East swell is optimal from a wider NE to S window, and NW winds provide the offshore. Wave size ranges from 2 to 1.8m with rides of under 50 metres - short, punchy bursts rather than long walls. Quality is good when the bars align, though the shifting nature means checking the shape before committing is essential. The setting is quintessential East Cape: remote, quiet, and undeveloped. Rip currents run near the rivermouth and submerged shingle can appear unpredictably. This is a solid intermediate-level option for surfers exploring the East Cape coast, offering consistent, uncrowded peaks in genuine wilderness.
