Bawa.

Bawa is a remote, slabby right-hand reef located deep in the Hinako Islands, south of Asu and west of Nias, Sumatra. It transforms solid S to SW swells into thick, hollow walls that can run for up to 150 meters, featuring deepwater energy that unloads onto a shallow, sharp reef. Known as one of Sumatra’s heaviest waves, Bawa produces thick-lipped barrels and intense drops, offering a raw and challenging frontier surfing experience. Although the 2005 Hinako uplift removed the powerful end section, slightly reducing wave consistency, the spot remains consistent overall due to its open ocean exposure. Best conditions occur on solid S to SW swells with easterly winds at mid to high tide. Hazards include the sharp reef, powerful waves, and extreme remoteness, making Bawa suitable only for advanced and expert surfers willing to access it primarily by boat charter.
