Surf spot guide · Lombok, Indonesia
Gili Trawangan features a playful right-hand reef break with crystal-clear water and scenic island views, best for intermediate and advanced surfers and easily accessed from the beach.
Gili Trawangan is a small island off Lombok's northwest coast, known for its accessible reef breaks and tropical setting. The main surf spot, Secrets, is located off the southeastern coast near the harbor and features a right-hand reef break with two peaks. It offers softer shoulders on smaller days near the reef's end and long, hollow walls for advanced surfers on the outer break. The wave is best surfed at mid to high tide and is accessible via a short 50-meter paddle from the beach through a channel in the reef, eliminating the need for a boat. Conditions are most favorable during the April to October dry season, especially with SSW swells and NW winds, although the wave can be inconsistent. Hazards include the exposed sharp reef, particularly at low tide, and sea urchins, so caution is advised. The spot is known for its warm water and laid-back island vibe, attracting a mix of local and visiting surfers, with basic but friendly facilities.
