Sète.

This long stretch of sandy coastline running between Sète and Marseillan is a textbook Mediterranean beach break - inconsistent, wind-sensitive, and only occasionally worth the paddle. The open beach is frequently mushy and blown out by the prevailing easterly wind chop, but the jetties at either end are the key to finding anything rideable: sand funnels against the structures, creating slightly more defined peaks with a degree of wind protection that the open beach simply cannot offer. Waves break over a sand bottom in the 0.3-1.2m range on good days, with a medium pace and a slopey, well-covered face - nothing heavy, but serviceable for intermediates working on fundamentals. Heading further south toward La Corniche opens up a different character entirely: reef sections around La Chapelle can throw up a surprisingly hollow, multi-sectioned left over a rock shelf that punches above its weight when the swell angle cooperates. The Mediterranean's limited swell fetch means this whole stretch fires only a handful of times a year, with SE swells doing the most work. Early mornings before the thermal wind cycle kicks in are the window to catch - the local 'renverse' effect briefly smooths conditions at dawn before the E wind reasserts itself. A car park serves the beach. The Agde jetty and Frontignan are worth checking if Sète is not producing.
