Carnon's main break, known locally as Les Roquilles, sits on the west flank of the Carnon port and is the default destination for surfers based in Montpellier. The wave is a sandy a-frame that pitches off a shifting peak, its shape heavily influenced by the harbour jetty on the eastern side. The bottom is well-covered sand producing slopey, medium-paced walls with occasional steep sections — workable for turning surfers but not particularly hollow or powerful. Waves range from short punchy bursts to occasional longer rides when the sandbank aligns. It fires on southerly swell quadrants, with SE through SW the productive window; pure south is the optimum angle. The spot is wind-sensitive and a clean NW offshore is the key to any real quality. All tide stages are surfable, though the bank can be fickle and shifts regularly. The jetty serves a dual purpose: it sculpts the peak and provides a convenient point to bypass the shorebreak and paddle directly into the lineup. A second quality option appears at the Grande Motte harbour jetty a short distance east, where the shifting peak can also produce good waves on the right day. The area's inconsistency is real — it rarely fires for extended runs — but when it does, the Montpellier surf community arrives in force. Crowds are heavy on any working swell, and locals understandably guard their limited good days closely.
