Palavas-les-Flots.

Palavas-les-Flots is a stretch of sandy Mediterranean beachbreak spread across several distinct sections either side of the town harbour. The wave is generally mellow and crumbly with occasional steeper sections, breaking over a flat sandy bottom in the 0.3-1.2m range. It rarely produces powerful surf, but the variety of peaks keeps options open. La Mairie produces consistent rights, while heading west from the harbour the standout section is Coquilles, where a large jetty channels swell and shapes the sandbar, making paddle-out straightforward. The Prévost canal splits the beach further west, generating rights on the north bank and lefts on the south bank - one of the few spots in the area that offers genuine lefts. Being a Mediterranean setup, this coast needs sustained onshore or cross-shore wind for at least a couple of days to generate rideable surf, and SE through S swells are the key angle for these exposures. The beach works across all tides given its sandy, gradually sloping profile. Palavas draws a regular crowd of Montpellier locals and summer tourists, particularly around the jetty at Coquilles where entry is easiest. The canal peaks and La Mairie sections tend to be quieter alternatives. Jellyfish and sea lice are seasonal hazards, most common in summer.
