Plage du Sillon.

Plage du Sillon is St-Malo's long sandy frontage, stretching roughly 2km along the base of the walled city and backed by the famous granite Sillon causeway. The break is a soft, forgiving beach break that peaks up in front of the thalasso center and beside la Hoguette groin, where the groyne structure helps organise the sandbanks enough to produce cleaner, more defined peaks than the rest of the beach. Waves are typically well-covered and crumbly rather than hollow, backing off quickly and producing short, fat rides in the 0-50m range - ideal for learners but rarely offering anything to excite experienced surfers. The spot only switches on during proper SW or NW storm swells; without a solid westerly pulse the bay sits almost flat. SW winds are the cleanest option, pushing swell in while holding the wave face open. The enormous tidal range of the Golfe de St-Malo means conditions shift dramatically through the day, and the spot is nominally surfable across all stages of the tide, though an incoming tide tends to push more swell into the bay and tighten the banks. Crowds are light given the modest wave quality - this is not a destination spot. The beach is well set up for beginners, with a surf school on site and easy flat-sand access. More capable surfers looking for better options can check the spots around Dinard and Lancieux to the south.
