Surf spot guide · Kadavu, Fiji
A remote right-hand reef off Kadavu, about half an hour's boat ride from Nagigia Island, that serves up long, makeable barrels when a south swell meets a northerly wind.
High Waves

Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Uatotoka is a reef break off Kadavu that peels to the right. On its day it is an excellent wave, with long barrels that you can actually make. Rides are fast and punchy, and a good one can run anywhere from 200 to 500 metres. This is a wave for advanced surfers. The recipe you want is a swell from the south-east round to the south, combined with a northerly wind. A straight south swell is the pick of the bunch. Aim to surf it on the incoming tide, from mid up to high. It handles waves from about 0.9 metres up to around 3 metres. Because the spot catches so much wind and swell, the right combination does not come together very often. When everything does fall into place, the trip out pays you back. Getting out there takes a boat, and the reef lies roughly half an hour's ride from Nagigia, the tiny island off Kadavu at Fiji's south-western tip. The surf resort on Nagigia that used to run boats out to the break is currently closed. Before paddling out, make sure you have permission to surf, as the breaks around here call for it. On the way out the scenery is huge, with the King Kong volcano standing out from the water. Out at the break it feels raw and wild, and the whole outing has a real sense of adventure.
