Surf spot guide · Kadavu, Fiji
A fast, hollow right-hander breaking over reef at the western end of Kadavu's south coast, reached only by boat and best left to experienced surfers.
King Kong Right is a right-hand reef break off Kadavu in Fiji. The King Kong area lies at the far western tip of Kadavu's southern coastline and ranks as the island's most celebrated surf. Expect a quick, hollow and fairly gnarly wave, with rides running somewhere between 50 and 100 metres. This is a quality wave, and strictly one for advanced surfers. The reef grabs plenty of swell, and anything from the southeast round to the southwest can turn it on, with a straight south swell the pick. Surfable size ranges from about 1.2 up to 3.7 metres. Any stage of the tide can work here. The southeast trade wind usually chops it up, so dawn and late-day sessions are your best bet. When a southeast swell meets winds from the north or northeast, the right can throw big, cavernous barrels. All the breaks around Kadavu are reached by boat.
Surf it early or late, when the trade winds have backed off.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE
You can only get to the surf around Kadavu by boat. You won't find a resort or surf camp anywhere on Kadavu's remote south coast. The small island of Nagigia nearby had a surf resort until recently, but it is closed at the moment. To surf Kadavu's south coast, first befriend the locals and ask their permission to ride the breaks. Expect to agree a fair price for food, a homestay and the boat trip out to the reefs.
