Riverton Rocks.

Riverton Rocks hold some of the longest right-hand rides on the Southland coast, with cruisey walls peeling for 500 metres or more when a big S swell wraps into the bay at low tide. The wave breaks over boulders and has a forgiving, mellow character that suits beginners and longboarders as much as shortboarders - the emphasis is on length and flow rather than power or barrel sections. Size ranges from 3 to 2.4m, and the S to SW swell window is narrow. When the swell does arrive and the tide cooperates, the reward is a genuinely remarkable ride - long, predictable, and set against the remote Southland landscape west of Invercargill. Westerly winds hold the face clean. Sharks are present in these waters but no other significant hazards are flagged. Nearby Colac Bay beach and Nick's Point offer alternatives if Riverton Rocks isn't big enough to fire.
