Porridge is a grinding left-hand point break on the Southland coast that throws up heavy barrels over rocky reef in solid S swells. The name is a warning as much as an identifier - the wave has real consequence, with the reef punishing anyone who falls in the wrong place. NE winds groom the face into clean lines, and mid tide on an incoming push is the target window. The wave handles 4 to 3m and the quality is rated excellent when the swell and wind align. Rides stretch 200 to 500 metres down the reef, with the barrel sections sustained through the critical zone before the wave opens up into a longer wall. Access requires farmer permission - the same land access that serves Beatons, the quality left in the next bay to the south.
