Papatowai.

Papatowai is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's most consequential big-wave breaks, hidden along the Southern Scenic Route between Papatowai village and Tautuku Bay in the remote Catlins coastline of Southland. The wave breaks over an uneven reef and comes alive in the 3-7.6m range, producing rides of 100-200 metres when conditions align. The peak throws up two distinct faces: a long barrelling right that rewards committed tube riders willing to navigate the full length of the reef, and a dredging, critically steep left that is especially dangerous given its shallow, boil-riddled take-off zone. Big swells from the Southern Ocean - ideally tracking from due south, with the SE to SW window also productive - combine with northwesterly offshores to produce the best conditions. The reef is shallow throughout, marked by large boils and dense kelp that obscure depth and add disorientation under heavy water. Tow-in teams operate here on the largest days, meaning boat traffic is an active hazard in the lineup. Sharks are a known presence in the Catlins region. Rips and strong currents run through the break, and there is no forgiving channel. Despite world-class wave quality, Papatowai sees crowds only rarely, reflecting the demanding combination of swell, wind, and tide required. Some additional beachbreak exists at adjacent Tahakopa Bay.
