Long Point is a remote reef break tucked into the rugged Catlins coastline on New Zealand's southern tip, accessible only across private farmland - permission from the landowner is essential and respect for the property is non-negotiable. The wave is a left-hander that unloads over a rock ledge, producing the kind of ledgy, fast-walled rides that reward committed intermediate to advanced surfers who can handle critical take-offs. On a medium to solid S swell - with the window opening from SE through to SW - the break comes alive, delivering walls that run for anywhere between 200 and 500 metres depending on conditions. The face is punchy and hollow through the initial section, then opens up into rippable walls that reward rail surfing and progressive manoeuvres. Low tide, ideally on the outgoing cycle, is when the ledge stands up most attractively and the shape tightens. A north-easterly wind holds the face clean and grooms conditions to their best. Wave face height ranges from 3 to 3m, with quality rated excellent when the swell and wind align. Despite that quality rating, the lineup is rarely crowded - this corner of New Zealand demands real commitment to reach, which naturally filters the crowd. Hazards include strong rip currents, submerged rocks, a shallow reef shelf with boils, and a notable shark presence common to southern NZ waters.
Ledgy left that runs 500 metres over rock, guards itself with rips and sharks.
