90 Mile Beach.

90 Mile Beach is one of the longest unbroken stretches of sand in the world, running roughly 88km along the western edge of Northland's Aupouri Peninsula. It is also marked as a National Highway at low tide - 4WD is essential and many vehicles get stuck in the soft sand or are caught by the incoming tide. The surf is a blown-out, swell-pounded mess on most days, but when small peaky swells combine with NE winds, good conditions materialise - especially at The Bluff, the only headland roughly two-thirds of the way up, which provides structure and shape to the otherwise featureless beach. The wave handles 1 to 1.8m and works across all tidal stages with incoming tide tending to produce the best shape. W swell is optimal from the wide S to NW window. The beach catches everything, though quality sessions are the exception. Solo surfing is the norm across virtually the entire stretch. Road access from Te Kao and a rudimentary campsite are the only infrastructure. Rip currents are present along the entire beach.
