Surf spot guide · Sumatra, Indonesia
Air Manis is a consistent sandy beach break near Padang offering both left and right waves suitable for all skill levels.
Air Manis is Padang’s most consistent surf spot, facing directly into SW swells filtering through the Playgrounds between Siberut and Sipora. Located about 15 kilometers south of Padang on the Sumatra mainland, this sandy beach break offers both left and right waves that are very consistent year-round, with wave lengths ranging from 300 to 500 meters. The gently sloping beach produces fast-peeling sandbanks on its better days, but overall quality is average and best suited to smaller conditions. It holds up to around head-high before becoming overpowered, with reliable morning offshores and occasional evening glass-offs. Suitable for surfers of all experience levels, Pantai Air Manis can be surfed at any tide and is typically uncrowded, featuring local surf schools, board rentals, and accommodation options nearby. Access to the surf may require a long paddle or a boat ride. Surfers should be aware of hazards such as jellyfish and strong currents, and it is recommended to surf during the morning or late afternoon for safety. The spot is also known for the Malinkundang stone, adding a unique cultural aspect to the experience.
