Sheltered beachbreak inside Cabo de Gata Natural Park, producing small, forgiving peaks on NE-SE swells.
Playa de los Genoveses is a sandy beachbreak inside Cabo de Gata Natural Park, one of the last undeveloped stretches of Mediterranean coastline in Spain. Shifting peaks break over a flat sand bottom in the 0.3-1m range, with occasional pulses when NE or SE swells push into the bay. Waves back off rather than pitch - crumbly, accessible walls that suit beginners. An east swell is optimal; the bay faces southeast and relies entirely on Mediterranean fetch, so Atlantic swells rarely arrive. Westerly winds are offshore at all tide stages. Access is via a dirt track from the San Jose road into the park; no facilities exist on the beach, which sits inside a protected reserve with strict development limits. San Jose, a few kilometres north, is the nearest surf check and fallback when this spot is flat. Crowds stay light given park visitor controls, though swimmers share the sand in summer.
