La Mata is a long east-facing sand beach stretching north of Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca, offering shifting peaks that break slow and crumbly across all tides. The wave is wellcovered and backing-off by nature, producing slopey walls suited to cruising and progression rather than power surfing. Surfers cluster toward the southern end where scattered rocks anchor the sand and produce more defined right-handers, the only reliable section on the beach. Swell needs a genuine NE through SE fetch to reach this stretch - pure easterlies are the sweet spot, generating the most consistent lined-up sets - while anything less than a solid 0.5m at the buoy rarely breaks with shape. Offshore winds blow from the west, typically arriving in the mornings before the sea breeze turns onshore in the afternoon. The Mediterranean window is unforgiving: groundswell is rare and the fetch is short, so the break comes alive mainly during autumn and winter storm periods when depressions track through the western Mediterranean.
