Kakanui.

Kakanui is a right-hand point break on the North Otago coast, breaking over a mix of uneven reef and sand in front of the Kakanui River mouth. The primary wave is a walling right that peels along the point with average shape on most days but occasionally organises into genuinely good walls when the swell direction and tide align. Peaks also form at the actual rivermouth and up toward the rocks at the northern end of the beach, offering variety across the stretch. The spot works best on S swell with a westerly offshore, though the wider NE to S swell window means it picks up most swells that track along the east coast of the South Island. Mid to high tide fills out the wave and smooths the reef influence, producing the cleanest shape. Wave size ranges from 2 to 1.8m, and the quality rarely pushes beyond good - this is an honest, reliable spot rather than a destination wave. Rip currents run near the rivermouth, sharks are present in North Otago waters, and submerged reef and rocks add consequence in the shallower sections. A local crew surfaces on the better days but the lineup is generally uncrowded and the atmosphere relaxed.
