Taupo Bay.

Taupo Bay is a strikingly beautiful bay on the eastern Northland coast that cradles a series of sucky peaks capable of barrelling up to almost double overhead when a proper NE swell fills in. The wave breaks over sand across the full width of the bay, producing A-frame peaks that offer both lefts and rights at all tidal stages. In strong NE swells, thrusting rights break off the southern end of the bay, adding a more directional option to the standard beach peaks. All southerly wind angles work offshore here, and SW is the most common. The wave handles 2 to 3m, making it one of the more size-tolerant beachbreaks in the region. The beauty of the setting draws crowds and a local surf school operates from the beach. Rip currents and sharks are the primary hazards. Beginners are comfortable on smaller days, while the barrel potential on bigger swells rewards experienced surfers.
