Fences is one of New Zealand's most extraordinary point breaks - a south-facing line of rock and sand ledges that, when conditions align, can string together rides approaching a full kilometre in length. The wave begins at the upper Point section, where it pitches hard and hollow before releasing into the long, grinding wall that defines Fences proper. Here the face opens up into a surfer's canvas: snap off the top, draw a long carving cutback, reset, repeat - until the Cabin end section arrives to close out the sequence or offer one last section for the committed. What determines whether you ride 100 metres or ten times that is the sand. It migrates, it stacks, it thins - and how it sits on any given swell dictates everything. The swell direction matters equally: a pure SW lines it up perfectly, filling in the Point before connecting to Fences and beyond. Get it right on a solid 1.8-2.4m day and you will be paddling back for fifteen minutes between sets. Access is down a farm track - leave the gate as you found it, or walk from Waiinu Beach and earn it the honest way. The Taranaki coastline does not give up gems like this without some friction. The reef is uneven and unforgiving, rips run hard, and sharks are present in these waters.
