Whangapoua.

Whangapoua is the standout wave on Great Barrier Island, breaking off a long triangulated bar where a rivermouth meets the crescent beach. The setup demands a true NE swell to unlock its best form - when it arrives, hollow barrels spin down the bar for stretches of 200 to 500 metres, making it one of the longest rides in the region. The wave is right-handed and rewards surfers who can read a fast, critical takeoff; once past the barrel section it can stay hollow through multiple sections before closing out on the shallower inner bar. Swell windows of N through E all produce rideable surf across the wider beach, with peaks up the crescent catching SE swells on smaller days. Nearby Awana handles small E swells, Kaitoke sits tucked behind offshore islands, and Medlands fires on its southern reef only on rare, large NE pulses. Tides matter here: low to mid on an outgoing tide produces the cleanest bar shape and the most consistent barrel sections. SW winds are the go-to offshore. Reaching the island requires a car ferry, and most surfers camp at one of the basic campsites scattered around Great Barrier. The rips are stronger than mainland beaches and shark sightings are not uncommon - situational awareness is essential. Crowds can form when conditions align, but the remoteness keeps the lineup manageable most of the time.
