Mangkudu Lefts Surf Spot Guide — Sumba, Indonesia

Mangkudu Lefts is a punchy left-hand reef break located just off the northern side of Pulau Mangkudu, a small uninhabited island south of East Sumba. It offers fast take-offs that start with a soft roll-in before quickly standing up into clean, down-the-line walls with short, hollow sections when the swell has enough push. The wave is more technical than it appears, rewarding good positioning and speed, and tends to break best with proper southwest energy and clean trade winds. Ideal for backhand carves and occasional tube rides when conditions align, the spot is surrounded by turquoise waters and coral reefs, providing a remote and adventurous atmosphere with minimal crowds. Access is mainly by boat, and surfers should be cautious of sharp reef, strong currents on larger swells, and limited emergency support, making thorough preparation essential.
