Canet Plage.

Canet Plage is a sandy Mediterranean beach break that earns its reputation as the go-to surf spot for the Perpignan area largely by default. The primary wave is a left that tucks into the lee of the southern harbour jetty, offering some shape and shelter when conditions align. A short right also appears under the right swell angle. The wave itself is well-covered and medium-paced, with steep sections but a generally forgiving, well-welling character - not punishing, but not particularly memorable either. Rides top out around 50m. The core challenge at Canet is frequency: the east-facing coastline of the Pyrénées Orientales picks up E to SE swells, but these are genuinely rare events, arriving only a handful of times per year. Offshore winds blow from the west, which is the dominant wind pattern here - but without swell those conditions go to waste. When everything does come together, longboarders and shortboarders both make the trip. Access is straightforward from the beachfront, with free car parking available. Kite and windsurfers are a consistent presence at and around the Pont des Basses nearby, so the water is not exclusively a surf zone. An estuary influence means water quality can dip after rainfall. Saint-Cyprien and Le Racou offer alternative options down the coast when swell allows.
