Surf spot guide · Taveuni, Fiji
A long, consistent right-hand reef break a quick boat trip off Qamea Island, opening with a hollow top section that eases into a fun run on the inside.
Maqai is a right-hand reef break sitting about 1.5 kilometres off Maqai Beach Resort on Qamea Island, in the Taveuni area of Fiji. Of the handful of breaks out in front of the resort, this right is the most consistent, and a good one can run for roughly 300 metres. The ride comes in three parts, starting with a hollow, barrelling stretch up the reef. Through the middle the wave softens into something more forgiving. Swells from the south and southwest light it up, while winds anywhere from northwest round to northeast keep it clean. It works through every stage of the tide. On a big day it can hold swell up to around four metres. The prime season runs from October to May, when the wind tends to blow from the north. This wave suits intermediate and advanced surfers. Warm water makes for comfortable sessions out here.
