Barra da Tijuca Surf Spot Guide — Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Posto 8 Barra da Tijuca is a popular and lively beach break located in western Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, known for its very long sandy beach with numerous peaks. The spot offers powerful, punchy waves with both left and right peaks, making it a favorite among local and visiting surfers. It works best with south to southwest swells, particularly from April to October when SSW to SSE swells bring consistent conditions, and offshore northeast winds provide fast, sometimes hollow rides. The beachbreak works on all tides and is divided into northeast and southwest zones: the northeast zone features tight right barrels and surfable left peaks with NE winds, while the southwest zone near Recreio and Pontal Island offers perfect A-frame waves favored by children and surf schools. The area is accessible, safe, and vibrant, with many amenities, though it can get crowded, especially on weekends and during summer months. Surfers should be mindful of strong currents and shifting sandbars, particularly if less experienced. Facilities and easy access make it an ideal spot for intermediates and above.
